Overview

Contentful provides a platform that companies use to create, manage and deliver digital content, such as product descriptions, articles, images, marketing copy and app text, across websites, mobile apps, digital displays and any other channel. It's best known as a pioneer of the "headless" content management system (CMS): instead of tying content to a particular website template, Contentful stores content in a structured way and delivers it through APIs to any front end developers build. Large brands use it to keep content consistent across dozens of websites, languages and apps.

Sascha Konietzke and Paolo Negri founded Contentful in Berlin in 2013, after building a mobile app development tool and realising that managing content for apps was a bigger problem. The company later established a headquarters in San Francisco while keeping large teams in Berlin and Denver. It has become one of Germany's best-known enterprise software companies.

Headless CMS explained

Traditional content management systems like early versions of WordPress combine content storage and presentation: you write a page and the CMS renders it on a website. That works for a single site but becomes difficult when a company needs the same content on a website, an iPhone app, an Android app, smart TVs, in-store screens and voice assistants. A headless CMS separates the "body" (content) from the "head" (presentation). Developers fetch content through APIs and display it however they like. This gives more flexibility and speed but requires more development work, which is why headless platforms are popular with companies that have strong engineering teams.

Products

  • Content platform: structured content modelling, editing and delivery via APIs and a global content delivery network.
  • Studio and experiences: visual tools that let marketers assemble pages and experiences without developers.
  • Personalisation: after acquiring Ninetailed in 2024, tools to tailor content to different audiences.
  • AI features: generating, translating and tagging content with AI, and preparing content for AI-powered search and chat experiences.
  • Marketplace: apps and integrations with commerce, analytics and design tools.

Customers

Contentful says it serves thousands of organisations, including about a third of the Fortune 500. Customers include consumer brands, retailers, media companies, financial services firms and software companies that run many digital properties. Global brands use it to manage content in dozens of languages and markets from one system.

Funding

Contentful raised about US$335 million in total, according to Crunchbase. Its US$80 million Series E in June 2020 was led by Sapphire Ventures. In July 2021 it raised a US$175 million Series F led by Tiger Global, with the Base10 Advancement Initiative and Tidemark, valuing it at about US$3 billion. Other investors include General Catalyst, Benchmark, Salesforce Ventures, Balderton Capital and Trinity Ventures. We haven't found a newer priced round, so the 2021 valuation should be treated as historical.

Revenue

Contentful doesn't publish revenue. Research firm Sacra estimated its annual recurring revenue at about US$219 million in 2024, up around 20% from 2023. That's a third-party estimate, so we show revenue as not disclosed in the fact tiles. Growth of about 20% suggests a mature enterprise software business rather than a hyper-growth startup.

Competition

Contentful competes with other headless and composable content platforms such as Sanity, Contentstack, Storyblok, Strapi and Hygraph; with digital experience platforms from Adobe, Sitecore and Optimizely; and with WordPress and its headless options. Front-end platforms such as Vercel are partners that often work alongside Contentful. Its advantages are its early leadership, enterprise customer base and broad ecosystem.

Contentful at a glance

Contentful is a content platform company founded in Berlin in 2013 by Sascha Konietzke and Paolo Negri, now with headquarters in Berlin and San Francisco. It pioneered the headless CMS and serves about a third of the Fortune 500. It raised a US$175 million Series F led by Tiger Global at about US$3 billion in July 2021; third parties estimated its 2024 ARR at about US$219 million.

Composable architecture

Contentful is part of a broader movement called composable architecture, or MACH (microservices, API-first, cloud-native and headless). Instead of buying one large suite for content, commerce, search and personalisation, companies choose the best tool for each job and connect them through APIs. Supporters argue this is faster and more flexible; critics note that integrating many tools adds complexity. The approach is popular with large digital teams, and vendors in the space have formed industry groups to promote standards.

Valuation context

A US$3 billion valuation on an estimated US$219 million ARR would be about 14 times revenue, a multiple achievable in 2021 but higher than many comparable public software companies traded at in later years. Our guide to SaaS valuation multiples explains how investors compare growth and multiples.

Questions for digital teams

  • How many channels, brands and languages do you need to support?
  • Do you have developers to build and maintain front ends?
  • How easy is it for marketers to work without engineering help?
  • How does pricing scale with content volume and users?

Content for AI search and assistants

As more people find information through AI assistants and AI-powered search rather than traditional web pages, companies need their content to be structured, accurate and easy for machines to read. Structured content stored in a headless platform, with clear fields for product specifications, prices and descriptions, is easier for AI systems to use correctly than text buried in page layouts. Contentful has argued that this shift makes structured content management more valuable, because the same content must feed websites, apps and AI experiences at once. Whether that becomes a new growth driver will be one of the key questions for the company in the coming years.

Latest developments (October 2026)

Contentful has been acquired by Salesforce. Salesforce announced a definitive agreement to buy the Berlin-founded content platform, reported by Tech.eu on 1 June 2026, and a note on Salesforce's announcement says the acquisition was completed on 1 September 2026. Terms were not disclosed; The Information reported a price of roughly US$1 billion to US$1.5 billion, well below its 2021 valuation of about US$3 billion. Salesforce plans to use Contentful as the content layer for Agentforce and Customer 360. Because it is no longer independent, we no longer include Contentful in our private company rankings.

What to watch

Watch for a new funding round or acquisition, AI-driven product launches, ARR disclosures, and competition from both newer headless platforms and large suites.

Takeaways

Digital teams managing many channels can centralise content in one system. Founders can learn from Contentful's early bet on API-first content. Investors should view its 2021 valuation against more moderate recent growth.
