Overview

K2 Space builds large, high-power satellite platforms, known as satellite buses, designed to be manufactured quickly and at much lower cost than traditional large satellites. A satellite bus provides the structure, power, propulsion, communications and control systems, while customers add their own payloads such as communications equipment or sensors. K2's bet is that cheap, heavy-lift rockets like SpaceX's Starship will make it possible to launch much bigger satellites, and that customers will want large, powerful spacecraft produced in volume. In July 2026 it raised US$500 million at a US$6.8 billion valuation, more than doubling its valuation in about seven months.

Brothers Karan Kunjur, the CEO, and Neel Kunjur founded K2 Space in 2022. The founders, who have backgrounds that include SpaceX, concluded that satellite design had been shaped by expensive launches that forced engineers to minimise mass at great cost, and that cheaper launch would allow a new approach: larger, more capable satellites built with simpler, more standardised designs.

Products

  • Large satellite buses: high-power platforms for communications, defense and other missions, built to be produced in volume.
  • Giga-class platform: a planned 100-kilowatt satellite, slated for the second half of 2028 according to coverage of the Series D.
  • Manufacturing: a factory in Torrance, California, designed to produce up to about 100 large satellites a year.

Funding

K2 Space raised a US$110 million Series B in February 2025 and a US$250 million Series C at a US$3 billion valuation in December 2025, led by Redpoint Ventures. In July 2026 it raised a US$500 million Series D at a US$6.8 billion post-money valuation, co-led by Kleiner Perkins and ICONIQ Growth, with CapitalG, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Altimeter Capital and ARK Invest. Reports put cumulative funding at around US$1 billion.

Customers and contracts

According to coverage of the Series D, K2 has agreements to provide an initial 30 satellites for SES's planned medium Earth orbit network, satellites for the Golden Dome space-based interceptor programme through partner Anduril, and satellite buses for the US Space Force's Protected Tactical Satcom-Global programme. Its next mission, called Trinity, is planned to launch multiple satellites in the second quarter of 2027.

Business model

K2 sells satellite buses and integrated satellites to commercial operators and government customers, typically under contracts that include development and production. Its economics depend on producing many satellites from standardised designs, spreading engineering costs across units and lowering the price per satellite compared with bespoke spacecraft.

Competition

K2 competes with traditional satellite manufacturers such as Airbus, Thales Alenia Space, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Boeing and Maxar, and with newer bus makers such as Apex, York Space Systems and Terran Orbital. SpaceX builds its own Starlink satellites in-house. K2's niche is large, high-power platforms produced quickly and cheaply.

K2 Space at a glance

K2 Space is a Torrance, California, satellite manufacturer founded in 2022 by former SpaceX engineers Karan and Neel Kunjur. It builds large, high-power satellite buses in volume. It raised a US$500 million Series D in July 2026 at a US$6.8 billion valuation, co-led by Kleiner Perkins and ICONIQ Growth, after a US$3 billion valuation in December 2025.

Timeline

  • 2022: founded.
  • February 2025: raises a US$110 million Series B.
  • December 2025: raises US$250 million at US$3 billion.
  • July 2026: raises US$500 million at US$6.8 billion.
  • Q2 2027: planned Trinity mission.

Why bigger satellites

For decades, launch cost thousands of dollars per kilogram, so satellite makers used exotic materials and complex designs to save weight, making satellites expensive and slow to build. Reusable rockets have cut launch costs dramatically, and Starship aims to reduce them further while carrying much larger payloads. If mass is cheap, engineers can use simpler, sturdier designs and add more power and capability. Large satellites with high power can support more communications capacity, stronger sensors and more manoeuvring. K2 was founded around this shift.

Defense and Golden Dome

The US Golden Dome initiative aims to build layered missile defense, including space-based sensors and interceptors, which would require large numbers of capable satellites. Companies that can produce satellites rapidly are well positioned for such programmes. K2's partnership with Anduril and its Space Force work tie it closely to US defense space spending, which has grown quickly.

Who works with K2 Space

K2's customers include satellite operators such as SES, defense primes and agencies, and companies building space-based systems for national security.

Valuation context

K2's valuation more than doubled between December 2025 and July 2026, reflecting strong investor appetite for space manufacturing tied to defense. Our guide to space startups compares it with peers.

Risks

  • Execution: scaling to high-rate production of large satellites is unproven.
  • Launch dependence: its strategy relies on cheap heavy-lift launch, including Starship.
  • Defense budgets: major programmes can change with policy.
  • Valuation: rapid step-ups assume contracts convert into revenue.

Questions for observers

  • How many satellites has K2 delivered and operated successfully?
  • When will production reach its planned rate?
  • How dependent is its plan on Starship's schedule?

The economics of mass production in space

Traditional large satellites, such as geostationary communications satellites, have often cost hundreds of millions of dollars each and taken years to build, because each one was heavily customised. Constellations like Starlink showed that building thousands of satellites on a production line could drive costs down dramatically. K2 aims to bring that production-line approach to larger, more powerful satellites, the class that has historically been the most expensive. If it succeeds, customers could deploy capabilities such as high-capacity communications or advanced sensing far more cheaply and quickly than before. The challenge is that large satellites are complex, and building them reliably at high rates has rarely been done outside SpaceX.

Latest developments (October 2026)

K2 Space raised a US$500 million Series D at US$6.8 billion around the end of July 2026, led by Kleiner Perkins and ICONIQ with Lightspeed, CapitalG and Altimeter, according to the Los Angeles Business Journal. Earlier in 2026 it launched its first large Mega Class satellite, Gravitas. Its Torrance factory is designed to produce about 100 satellites a year, and it is developing a more powerful satellite for launch as early as 2029.

What to watch

Watch the Trinity mission, satellite deliveries to SES and defense customers, factory output and new contracts.

Takeaways

Satellite operators may gain cheaper, more powerful platforms. Founders can see how a shift in launch costs creates new product opportunities. Investors should watch production milestones.
