Overview

Neo Financial is a Calgary fintech offering credit cards, savings accounts, mortgages and investing, mostly through partnerships with Canadian retailers. Its retail partners have included Hudson's Bay, whose credit card program Neo ran. Its pitch to consumers is rewards and cashback with partner merchants. Its pitch to retailers is a modern card and loyalty program they don't have to build themselves.

Neo was founded in 2019 by Andrew Chau and Jeff Adamson, who had previously co-founded the food delivery company SkipTheDishes, along with Kris Read. It's one of the most prominent tech companies to come out of Calgary.

Funding history

May 2022 Series C: C$185 million at a valuation above US$1 billion, making Neo a unicorn about three years after it was founded. The company said at the time that it had more than a million customers.

2024 Series D: C$362 million in a mix of equity and debt, led by Tencent. The Logic reported that the round lowered Neo's valuation compared with 2022. Research firm Sacra estimates the valuation at around US$510 million, but that's a third-party estimate, not a company disclosure.

2026: C$68.5 million from a syndicate of more than 100 Canadian investors, including AIMCo, Northleaf Capital Partners, Plaza Ventures, Sandstone Asset Management and Caldwell's growth fund. It was reported to be at a higher valuation than the 2024 round. The company plans to use the money to bundle existing loans and sell them to investors, a step towards funding a much bigger lending book without relying on its own equity.

Revenue: what's public

Neo hasn't published audited revenue. Third-party estimates exist, such as Sacra's estimate of around US$115 million in annualized revenue for 2024, but they're modelled, so we show revenue as not disclosed. Neo topped a 2024 national ranking of fastest-growing companies based on three-year revenue growth, which confirms rapid growth without giving a dollar figure.

What Neo's path shows

Neo is a useful case study in the trade-off between growth and valuation in lending businesses. Rounds that mix debt with equity, a down round, and then a smaller raise at a higher price are all common moves in consumer credit. Lending needs a lot of balance-sheet capacity, and how that's funded affects dilution as much as the headline round size. Our guides to venture debt and liquidation preferences explain why down rounds affect each shareholder class differently.

What this means if you're…

Selling to Neo: a lending-focused fintech scaling its loan book needs credit risk tools, data infrastructure, compliance, collections and capital markets advisers.

A retailer: Neo's partnership model is an alternative to running your own card program through a traditional bank.

A fintech founder in Western Canada: Neo's investor syndicate shows how much Canadian institutional and private capital is available for later-stage rounds.
