Overview
Tailscale makes it easy to connect computers, servers and devices into a private network without the usual pain of setting up a VPN. You install it, log in with an existing identity provider such as Google or Microsoft, and your machines can talk to each other securely wherever they are. Under the hood it's built on WireGuard, an open-source VPN protocol, with Tailscale handling the hard parts: key management, access rules and getting connections through firewalls.
It was founded in 2019 by Avery Pennarun, David Crawshaw and David Carney, a group of experienced engineers, several of them ex-Google. Pennarun is CEO, and the company is headquartered in Toronto.
How it grew
Tailscale grew the way many developer tools do: bottom-up. Engineers started using the free plan for home labs and side projects, liked it, and then brought it into work. The company calls this kind of security "identity-first networking": access depends on who you are rather than which network you're on. That idea has replaced the old model of a company VPN guarding a single office network.
The CEO described the growth leading into the Series C as "surprising" in coverage by BetaKit. A lot of that came from businesses turning individual engineers' usage into paid company-wide plans.
Funding history
May 2022: a US$100 million Series B, co-led by CRV and Insight Partners, that valued Tailscale at about US$1 billion.
April 2025: a US$160 million Series C, roughly C$230 million, led by Accel. Returning investors CRV, Insight Partners, Heavybit and Uncork Capital also took part. It was an all-equity round. BetaKit, quoting the CEO, put the post-money valuation at US$1.45 billion; Bloomberg reported about US$1.5 billion. The company said it would use the money to expand internationally and grow its engineering, product and sales teams.
Worth noticing: the valuation rose only modestly between 2022 and 2025, even as the company grew. That's typical of companies that raised at peak-era prices and then needed a few years for revenue to catch up. It still counts as an up round in a much tougher market.
Revenue: what's public
Tailscale hasn't published its revenue or ARR. Its pricing is public, so you can see the shape of the model: a free tier for individuals and small teams, then per-user paid plans for businesses, with enterprise contracts at the top. If you need an estimate, the approach in our revenue estimation guide works well for product-led SaaS: combine headcount, pricing and any customer counts the company has mentioned.
What this means if you're…
Selling to Tailscale: a company growing its international sales team after a big Series C typically buys sales tooling, recruiting help, and finance and compliance systems for new countries.
Building developer tools: Tailscale is a clear example of product-led growth turning into enterprise revenue, which is exactly the pattern Series B and C investors look for. See what VCs look for.
Choosing a network access tool: compare how vendors handle identity, device posture and audit logs, and how much ongoing maintenance each one needs.
