Overview
Vena makes software that finance teams use for budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting and planning, a category usually called FP&A or corporate performance management. Its distinguishing idea is that it works with Excel rather than trying to replace it. Finance teams keep the spreadsheet interface they already know, while Vena adds a central database, workflows, version control and audit trails underneath.
Vena was founded in Toronto in 2011 by Don Mal and has grown into one of Canada's larger enterprise software companies, selling mainly to mid-sized organisations.
Funding history
September 2020: $25 million in debt financing from CIBC Innovation Banking.
April 2021: a C$300 million Series C led by Vista Equity Partners, one of the largest software-focused private equity firms in the world. It was a minority investment, so Vista didn't take control. Two Vista executives joined Vena's board.
The structure is the interesting part. According to reporting cited by BetaKit, most of the C$300 million went to buying shares from earlier investors, including JMI Equity and Centana. Only about C$100 million was new money for the company. That's a common pattern in growth deals: a new investor gets a meaningful stake, early backers get liquidity, and the company raises the capital it actually needs. The round brought Vena's total funding to roughly C$450 million. Vena didn't disclose its valuation or financial metrics.
Revenue: what's public
Vena hasn't published its revenue or ARR. In 2021 it said it had more than 900 customers. Its software is sold as annual subscriptions, so revenue is mostly recurring. If you need an estimate, combine customer counts, typical mid-market contract sizes in FP&A software and headcount, as described in our revenue estimation guide.
Why Vista's involvement matters
Vista is known for a detailed operating playbook it applies across its software portfolio companies, covering pricing, sales productivity, customer success and operating efficiency. Even as a minority investor, its involvement typically brings that focus. For anyone selling to Vena, it's useful to understand how PE-backed companies buy: with a strong emphasis on measurable return on investment.
What this means if you're…
Selling to Vena: expect a focus on ROI and operating efficiency. Tools that help sales productivity, customer success and finance operations fit well.
Evaluating FP&A software: Vena's Excel-native approach suits finance teams that want structure without abandoning spreadsheets. Compare it with fully cloud-native planning tools on ease of adoption.
Studying deal structures: the Series C is a clear example of a mixed primary and secondary round. See our guide to secondaries.
