Overview

ByteDance is the Chinese technology company behind TikTok, its Chinese sister app Douyin, the news aggregator Toutiao, the video editor CapCut, the workplace suite Lark and the AI chatbot Doubao. It pioneered the use of recommendation algorithms to show each user an endlessly personalised feed of content, a model that reshaped social media worldwide and pushed rivals from Instagram to YouTube to copy it. By most measures ByteDance is the world's most valuable private company outside the AI labs, and one of the largest internet companies of any kind by revenue and users.

Zhang Yiming founded ByteDance in Beijing in 2012 with Liang Rubo, his university roommate. Zhang, who had worked at Microsoft and several startups, believed that machine learning could replace editors and social graphs in deciding what people see. Toutiao, launched in 2012, applied that idea to news; Douyin, launched in 2016, and TikTok, which merged with Musical.ly in 2018, applied it to short video with enormous success. Zhang stepped down as CEO in 2021, and Liang Rubo now leads the company.

Businesses

  • Douyin: China's dominant short-video app, also a major e-commerce and local services platform through livestream shopping and in-app purchases.
  • TikTok: the international short-video app, with more than a billion users, and TikTok Shop for social commerce.
  • Toutiao and Xigua: news and longer video in China.
  • CapCut: a widely used video editing app.
  • Doubao and Volcano Engine: one of China's most used AI chatbots and the company's cloud and AI model platform, backed by heavy investment in AI computing.
  • Lark (Feishu): a workplace collaboration suite.

How the valuation is set

ByteDance hasn't raised a traditional venture round in years. Instead, its valuation is most often signalled by the prices at which it offers to buy back shares from employees, and by trades among investors. A December 2023 buyback at US$160 per share valued it at about US$268 billion. In early 2025 it offered US$189.90 per share, valuing it at roughly US$315 billion. In September 2025 Reuters reported a new buyback at US$200.41 per share, valuing the company at more than US$330 billion. Buyback prices are set by the company and may differ from what outside investors would pay, so some secondary market trades and investor marks have been higher; we use the buyback figure because it is the most widely reported.

Ownership

ByteDance's early and large investors include SoftBank's Vision Fund, HongShan (formerly Sequoia China), General Atlantic, KKR, Susquehanna International Group, Coatue and Tiger Global. Global investors were reported to own about 60% of the company, its founders about 20% and employees about 20%. Zhang Yiming holds a much larger share of voting control than his economic stake through a dual-class structure, according to reports.

The TikTok question in the US

US lawmakers raised national security concerns that the Chinese government could access American users' data or influence TikTok's recommendations. In 2024 Congress passed a law requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok's US operations or face a ban. After repeated extensions, a deal was reached to create a new US joint venture to run TikTok in the United States, with American and other investors including Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX holding most of the equity and ByteDance keeping a minority stake below 20%, along with licensing arrangements for its technology. The arrangement removed the immediate threat of a ban but leaves questions about how TikTok US and ByteDance will work together over time.

Competition

In China, Douyin competes with Tencent's WeChat Channels and Kuaishou in short video, with Alibaba and PDD in e-commerce and with Meituan in local services. Internationally, TikTok competes with Meta's Instagram Reels and Facebook, Google's YouTube Shorts and Snap. In AI, Doubao competes with Alibaba's Qwen, DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Tencent and Baidu at home. Its advantages are its recommendation technology, enormous user base and fast product execution.

ByteDance at a glance

ByteDance is a Beijing technology company founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming and Liang Rubo, now led by Liang. It owns TikTok, Douyin, Toutiao, CapCut, Lark and the Doubao AI chatbot. Its September 2025 employee buyback valued it at more than US$330 billion, up from about US$315 billion earlier that year and US$268 billion in December 2023. A US joint venture now runs TikTok in America, with ByteDance holding a minority stake.

Why the recommendation algorithm mattered

Earlier social networks mainly showed content from people you followed. ByteDance's apps show content chosen by algorithms that learn from every swipe, pause, like and share, so even new users with no friends on the platform get an engaging feed within minutes. Creators can reach huge audiences without a large following, which encouraged a flood of content. This made ByteDance's apps extraordinarily engaging and efficient at advertising, and forced the whole industry to adopt similar approaches.

AI investment

ByteDance has become one of China's largest investors in AI, spending heavily on computing infrastructure and developing its own models under export controls that limit access to the most advanced US chips. Doubao became one of China's most popular AI assistants, and Volcano Engine sells AI model access to businesses at aggressive prices. AI also powers its recommendation systems, advertising tools and content moderation.

Could ByteDance go public?

ByteDance has periodically been reported to consider an IPO, but Chinese regulation of overseas listings, US-China tensions and the TikTok situation have made a listing complex. Strong profits mean it doesn't need public market capital, and buybacks give employees and early investors some liquidity. Our guide to the largest private companies in the world compares ByteDance with other giants that remain private.
