Overview
Hootsuite is one of the best-known social media management platforms in the world. Businesses use it to schedule and publish posts across social networks, respond to messages and comments, monitor what people are saying about their brand, and measure results, all from one dashboard. For many marketers, it was the first tool they ever used to manage several social accounts at once.
Ryan Holmes founded Hootsuite in Vancouver in 2008, originally as an internal tool at his digital agency. It grew rapidly as social media became a core part of marketing. Holmes later stepped back from day-to-day leadership, and the company has had several CEOs since. Irina Novoselsky became CEO in 2023.
How Hootsuite makes money
Hootsuite sells subscriptions in tiers, from plans for individuals and small businesses to enterprise packages for large organizations with many users, brands and approval workflows. Larger plans add features such as advanced analytics, social listening, employee advocacy and customer care tools. It's a classic software-as-a-service model with mostly recurring revenue.
The company has described its go-to-market as heavily inbound. Its CEO has said a very large share of new business arrives without outbound sales, which is unusual for a company of its size and helps keep acquisition costs down.
Funding history
Hootsuite raised most of its outside capital in its first several years.
March 2012: OMERS Ventures invested $20 million in a deal that valued Hootsuite at about US$200 million. Notably, OMERS didn't buy new shares from the company. It bought existing shares from employees and early investors in a secondary transaction, an early example of the kind of liquidity deal described in our guide on selling shares before an IPO.
August 2013, Series B: US$165 million led by Insight Venture Partners, with Accel Partners and OMERS. It was one of the largest venture rounds ever raised by a Canadian software company at the time.
September 2014, Series C: US$60 million led by a large Boston-based asset manager, reported to be Fidelity, with Accel, Insight and OMERS Ventures participating and Silicon Valley Bank providing financing. Hootsuite said this brought its total financing to US$250 million. The CEO said the round was priced at roughly double the Series B valuation, though no exact figure was disclosed. Hootsuite used part of the money for acquisitions, including a company called Zeetl announced at the same time.
Press reports later described attempts to sell the company at much higher valuations that didn't complete. Since no deal was announced, we don't show those figures as a valuation.
Revenue: our estimate
Hootsuite doesn't publish financial statements. Our estimate of roughly US$350 million to US$400 million a year is based on public comments: at an industry event in 2024, CEO Irina Novoselsky described the company as having "almost $400 million" in revenue, according to Latka's report, and other summaries put 2024 revenue above US$350 million. We show a range rather than a single figure because a conference remark isn't the same as audited results. For older context, reports in 2021 said Hootsuite had passed US$200 million in annual recurring revenue.
The Talkwalker acquisition
In April 2024, Hootsuite announced it would acquire Talkwalker, a Luxembourg company founded in 2009 that provides AI-powered social listening and consumer intelligence. The two had worked together on integrations since 2015. Terms weren't disclosed. The deal deepened Hootsuite's capabilities in understanding what consumers say about brands across the web, which complements its publishing and engagement tools. It's a good example of a mature software company using acquisitions to move into adjacent, higher-value products. See our guide to add-on acquisitions.
Competitive landscape
Social media management is crowded. Hootsuite competes with other dedicated platforms, enterprise marketing suites that include social tools, and the native tools offered by social networks themselves. Generative AI is changing the category quickly, with tools that draft posts, suggest replies and summarise conversations. Hootsuite's advantages are its brand recognition, broad customer base and inbound engine. Its challenge is keeping its product ahead as competitors and AI tools make basic scheduling a commodity.
Why Hootsuite matters in Canadian tech history
Hootsuite was one of the companies that put Vancouver on the global tech map in the early 2010s. Its large venture rounds signalled to international investors that Canadian software companies could scale globally. Many people who worked there went on to found or lead other companies in Vancouver and beyond.
What to watch next
Watch how Hootsuite integrates Talkwalker, its AI product launches, and any moves towards a sale or IPO. Like many companies that raised a lot of venture capital years ago, its long-term investors will eventually want an exit, so any change of ownership would be a major event.
